SETI@home is the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. It analyzes the data from the radio telescope at Arecibo (a small chunk is downloaded onto your computer, analyzed in the spare time, and sent back) and the results are integrated into the ongoing study. I think the X-files is cool because I believe (especially after watching the movie Fight the Future on DVD, with the director's and Chris Carter's commentary) that the X-files is mythology in action, and mythology, and especially the creation of new myths, always fascinates me.
