The Science-Fiction Tabloid was a 'zine published by C. Keith Ray, who asked me at a party to write the column "Mysticism and Science Fiction" for the 'zine. I complied for vols. 2-4 (vol. 1 always has been a mystery to me).

Why was there no volume 5? (I had a "Mysticism and Science-Fiction" column all planned out, as well as a comic retelling, perhaps even suitable for filking, of "One-Night Stand".) Well, I went off to graduate school, always a life-changing event, which changed my life in ways I could never have realized.... for one thing, that was how I got to Europe. In any case, no longer living in the same area, it was impossible for me to whine at Keith enough to get him to publish another one. (Just kidding, Keith!) However, the SFT quit at its peak--more contributors, longer issues... and certainly some very interesting stuff, even if I didn't write it!

Note from Keith : The SF Tabloid never dies, it just takes long breaks between issues.

For those of you who are easily confused, at the time I was using the name "Cynthia Powell." At least it's easier to spell than Wunsch!

And what did I learn from writing for the Science-Fiction Tabloid? First, the importance of keeping the editor happy. I'll never forget Keith giving me a half-hour lecture on typography, with special consideration of em and en dashes, or of drawing the cover art for the SFT 4 while sitting at his desk a night or two before publication.

Words from C. Keith Ray, the Editor/Publisher about the SF Tabloid:

I don't [have] any copies of Science Fiction Tabloid #1 in my files. I can't remember anything about its content. I think I self-published one of my not-very-good science fiction stories, so it is probably for the best that no one, including me, can see the SF Tabloid #1 today.

I used MacWrite, which was only capable of doing a single column of text. I'm sure I can recall 'tricking' MacWrite into doing two columns of text by printing on each sheet of paper twice and adjusting the margins each time. I may have used that technique for SFT#3 as well.

These are the scanned-in pages of the original Science-Fiction Tabloids, allowing you the full experience (except for the smell and feel of the paper and ink) of the original copies. The text equivalents are in preparation, so that disabled readers can also experience the Science-Fiction Tabloids.
